Volunteer With Us
Using first aid skills to help others in need is the heart of what St. John Ambulance is.
Every single one of our uniformed members is a volunteer who has chosen to give back to their community by studying and training hard to learn advanced first aid skills, and then taken those skills out into the community to help others.
Being a volunteer with us isn’t like a lot of other volunteer opportunities. Developing your pre-hospital medical skills requires a long-term commitment – months to years, generally – and we’re looking for people who appreciate that good skills take hard work, and time, to learn.
We ask for your time and dedication. If you can provide that, we’ll provide the training, field experience, and mentorship to help you develop skills that will change your – and your patient’s – life.

What do we do?
We Volunteer all over greater Vancouver at a huge variety of public events. We provide first aid services for everything from festivals and concerts to marathons and NHL hockey games.
We also run weekly training nights to learn medical skills and practice our treatments.

What do we expect from you?
At St. John Ambulance we volunteer our time to train and support you. In return, we expect:
- A strong desire to learn, help others, and serve your community.
- Regular attendance to training nights.
- Maintaining your first aid qualifications, including Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR and Advanced Medical First Responder (AMFR). We provide the certification for both to our members for free.
- A minimum of 60 duty hours a year at SJA events.

What do you need to volunteer?
We want you to have the basics before you sign up. You’ll need:
- To be at least 16 years old. For anyone younger, contact us about joining one of our cadet divisions!
- A current Standard First Aid certificate, or higher. St. John Ambulance provides SFA training if you would like to get certified.
- A CPR C or CPR/BLS certification within the last year. We know your certificate might be valid for longer, but our members renew every 12 months to ensure the skills stay fresh.
